Newbie question re: coin dealers
I'm pretty new to buying PM's. I've mainly bought via apmex but recently started visiting the coin shops and coin shows. My question is are the prices quoted by the dealer firm or is there room to haggle. Not sure what the "etiquette" here is. If I walk in with cash and want to buy a roll of SAE or 1/4 bag of 90% is it improper to counter offer? Seems like coin shows would be more likely to do this. Just trying to get what the accepted practice is in this industry. Thanks for the help. I have learned a great deal already from this forum.

Re: Newbie question re: coin dealers
$ MONEY TALKS $
i always make a counter-offer and then you can always haggle about who covers the tax just make sure he sees you have cash in hand plus he may be more inclined to make a deal " one on one " my opinion/experience |
Re: Newbie question re: coin dealers
The dealer is there to make money, any way he can. If he fingers you as an easy mark, that's how he'll play you. If he recognizes that you know the market as well as he does, he'll work to make his profit from quantity instead. If he makes you to be a fair, repeat customer ... you're more likely to get his best offers, figuring to make more from you when the market is quiet ... provided you don't try to screw him in the process.
But don't forget the first line. |
Re: Newbie question re: coin dealers
It was far easier years ago to bargin at coin shows. You can always try, I now some dealers and have gotten good prices at shows because they found a particular coin at the show that they wanted and were a little short on funds for the coin. It all depends, but until the Fiat Dollar FALLS HARD, cash still talks.

Re: Newbie question re: coin dealers
Be fair to your dealer and they will be fair to you.
I traded some junk silver today for some gold. A guy came in right behind me to sell a similar amount of junk silver and was quoted 5% less than I just did my deal for. They have to make some money and they are important to have on your side. Spend some time getting to know them and trading back and forth will be profitable for both of you. |
